IMPORTANT information for prospective owners: "Gypsy Vanner" is NOT a breed. The name Vanner was given to these beautiful horses by Dennis Thompson of Gypsy Gold, a business venture, as part of his marketing program. The Gypsy Vanner Horse Society (GVHS) is alleged to be a registry for a select few of the cobs imported; those of higher quality. In reality, Vanners are no better or worse than those registered with either the Gypsy Cob Society of America or the Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse Association. In many cases you will find sires, dams and siblings of GVHS registered horses registered with the GCSA and/or the GCDHA. Registration selection is an individual preference, with many owners fed up with Thompson's death-grip on the GVHS and attempts to control their speech and their individual businesses, choosing to register elsewhere. We strongly urge anyone interested in the breed to do their homework. Look at the other registries, read articles by someone other than Thompson and get in contact with other owners through several chat groups. BUYER BEWARE!!!!! Whether you know them as Gypsy Cobs, Romany Cobs, Colored Cobs, Irish Cobs or Irish Tinkers, this sturdy, gentle breed will capture your heart. Typically 14-15.2H, the Gypsy Horse is a powerful and compact draft horse, bred to pull the caravans and wagons of Gypsy Romany families in Europe. The horse breeds utilized for the foundation of this breed - Clydesdale, Shire, Friesian and Dales Pony - each contribute to the standard. The Gypsy horse is medium to heavy boned, well proportioned with a short back, balanced with ample muscle and abundant feather starting at the knee in the front and hock in the rear. A thick, flowing - often double - mane and luxuriant tail reaching to the ground are desirable. Colors vary, with the most common being black and white. Prized for their intelligence, stamina and gentle nature, the Gypsy Horse is gaining in popularity in the United States, with registries established to aid in informed breeding. With fewer than 3,000 believed to be in the United States, you may not be familiar with the breed, but once exposed, you’re captivated.
